A national treasure's journey to the brink and back。

'Will I wake up?'
'There's a 50:50 chance。'

Michael Rosen wasn't feeling well。 Soon he was struggling to breathe, and then he was admitted to hospital, suffering from coronavirus as the nation teetered on the edge of a global pandemic。

What followed was months on the wards: six weeks in an induced coma, and many more weeks of rehab and recovery as the NHS saved Michael's life, and then got him back on his feet。 Throughout Michael's stay in intensive care, a notebook lay at the end of his bed, where the nurses who cared for him wrote letters of hope and support。 Embarking on the long road to recovery, Michael was soon ready to start writing about his near-death experience。

Combining stunning new prose poems by one of Britain's best loved poets and the moving coronavirus diaries of his nurses, doctors and wife Emma-Louise Williams, this is a beautiful book about love, life and the NHS。 Featuring original illustrations by Chris Riddell, each page celebrates the power of community, the importance of kind gestures in dark times, and the indomitable spirits of the people who keep us well。

As I read, my vision blurred and I wanted to cry。 These poems are overwhelming, I think it's because it's the truth。 As I read, my vision blurred and I wanted to cry。 These poems are overwhelming, I think it's because it's the truth。 。。。more

An excellent book for anyone who wants to understand more about the Covid pandemic through the eyes of a survivor and warrior, told with love, humility and admiration for the NHS by the inimitable Michael Rosen。

A heartbreaking account of the life-changing effects of the vicious virus that is Covid。  Harrowing to read, yet moving, inspirational and funny, it not only provides an insight into the life of the great writer, Michael Rosen, but also the unbelievably hard work and dedication of our amazing NHS staff。  An intense, but good read。

Michael Rosen is something of a national treasure in the UK as a children's author。 He was one of the first celebrities hospitalised with covid 19 at the start of the pandemic here。I think this one will be a good one to revisit in years to come as a document about his treatment and recovery and the time that it was。I do wonder how much of the NHS staff writing him letters etc was celebrity treatment or if everyone gets this ICU? In any case it's good they did as it's now in this book to look bac Michael Rosen is something of a national treasure in the UK as a children's author。 He was one of the first celebrities hospitalised with covid 19 at the start of the pandemic here。I think this one will be a good one to revisit in years to come as a document about his treatment and recovery and the time that it was。I do wonder how much of the NHS staff writing him letters etc was celebrity treatment or if everyone gets this ICU? Humbling。 I've always had Michael Rosen in my life - through poems and rhymes and then shared with my classes and my own children。。。so to hear him become so ill was heartbreaking。。。to read about it is equally so。。。an amazing account which makes you appreciate everything again as he does Humbling。 I've always had Michael Rosen in my life - through poems and rhymes and then shared with my classes and my own children。。。so to hear him become so ill was heartbreaking。。。to read about it is equally so。。。an amazing account which makes you appreciate everything again as he does 。。。more

Destined to be a long lasting classic, that will explain the impact of the pandemic to our children and grandchildren。 Simple, beautiful, moving and funny。

This book should be thrown at all the anti vaxxers and Covid non believers!

I absolutely love Michael Rosen's children's books and watching him perform his poetry on youtube is an absolute pleasure。 I would like to give 5/5 to cheer on Michael's ongoing recovery and for the lovely sentiments behind this book。 As a read, it was possibly more 3/5。 I feel awful saying it but particularly the section with hospital notes had me somewhat glazed over。 Some of the poems do have some gorgeously funny moments amongst the sadness and confusion。 What a wonderful man。 I absolutely love Michael Rosen's children's books and watching him perform his poetry on youtube is an absolute pleasure。 I would like to give 5/5 to cheer on Michael's ongoing recovery and for the lovely sentiments behind this book。 As a read, it was possibly more 3/5。 I feel awful saying it but particularly the section with hospital notes had me somewhat glazed over。 Some of the poems do have some gorgeously funny moments amongst the sadness and confusion。 What a wonderful man。 。。。more

An important and relevant about the true experience and recovery of getting Covid and the effects it can cause, both temporarily and long last。 Everyone should read this, as it is a quick read due to it being written in prose, but a highly insightful book。 Michael’s story is heartbreak, and is a story many around the world are either facing or have experienced。

not for me, very repetitive。 did make me cry in the beginning tho

This book matters at so many levels。 It is, primarily, the very personal account of poet and author Michael Rosen’s experience with Covid 19 in the very earliest part of the pandemic。 In a matter of fact yet emotionally charged voice he records simply and profoundly how the virus ravaged his body and almost ended his life。 Peppered throughout are the kindnesses of NHS staff, the restorative love of family, and the incidental moments which marked his path to better health。 The writing is evocativ This book matters at so many levels。 It is, primarily, the very personal account of poet and author Michael Rosen’s experience with Covid 19 in the very earliest part of the pandemic。 In a matter of fact yet emotionally charged voice he records simply and profoundly how the virus ravaged his body and almost ended his life。 Peppered throughout are the kindnesses of NHS staff, the restorative love of family, and the incidental moments which marked his path to better health。 The writing is evocative but also economical, lending the development of his story a confiding and authentic tone which is utterly disarming。 Prepare to weep hot tears and to laugh out loud in equal measure, as the formidable imagination that Rosen has brought to his body of previous work is applied to such a life altering episode。 At another level this is a record of what Covid really meant to so many - some who suffered as Michael did, and others who lost their lives。 It is this aspect which will give this account abiding power and importance over the long haul。 In a world of mitigations with a narrative of ‘living with the virus’ and ‘emerging from the pandemic’。 ⁦‪⁦‪Michael Rosen’s account forbids us from trivialising just how serious and deadly this period of our history has been, and how solemnly determinative government decisions were for many thousands of people in the midst of a pandemic。 I am grateful for this wonderful book, and will be passing it on to others - particularly those who served in our NHS at a time of global crisis。 This book serves as a ledger of just how much we owe to them, just how much love can do, and just how much every life matters。 。。。more

A superb and heartfelt account of Michael Rosen's experiences of Covid-19 and his rehabilitation。 So beautifully put together - his poetry, notes from the doctors and nurses who cared for him when he was induced, and messages from his wife Emma。 Some funny moments too, particularly his tweets in response to Covid-19 conspiracists! His honesty pulls at your heartstrings。 Brilliant book to kick off 2022 and which I wholeheartedly recommend! Through a series of short poems and diary entries, Michael Rose tells the story of his fight against and recovery from Covid。 Although the subject matter is dark the way it's written ensures the reader isn't bogged down, and there is a sense of hope in it。Thoroughly enjoyed it, shows a scary side to a disease that some people are fortunate enough not to see, and the steps that come after you have 'recovered'。 Through a series of short poems and diary entries, Michael Rose tells the story of his fight against and recovery from Covid。 Although the subject matter is dark the way it's written ensures the reader isn't bogged down, and there is a sense of hope in it。Thoroughly enjoyed it, shows a scary side to a disease that some people are fortunate enough not to see, and the steps that come after you have 'recovered'。 。。。more

I heard Michael Rosen on Radio 4 in March 2020 defending older people’s lives while they were being discussed as expendable collateral before Lockdown。 Next thing I knew he was in an induced coma fighting for his life against COVID。 This is a vital and human document of that mad time, of his fight to live and of those who fought to help him win that battle。

Read in one sitting as it’s hard to stop once you start。 A subject that many will want to avoid but if you want to know what it was like being mortally ill with Covid at its worst and how amazing the NHS were and are, this is the book to read。

Many Different Kinds of Love is Michael Rosen's beautiful, painful and poetic account of his experience with covid early last year。 It is chronological, which means that much of the first section of the book consists of the letters his carers and nurses wrote for him while he was in an induced coma in ITU。 Then there's the story of his gradual recovery, from the ward, to the rehab centre, then home, learning to walk again, getting a hearing aid and eye tests to help with the damage that microemb Many Different Kinds of Love is Michael Rosen's beautiful, painful and poetic account of his experience with covid early last year。 It is chronological, which means that much of the first section of the book consists of the letters his carers and nurses wrote for him while he was in an induced coma in ITU。 Then there's the story of his gradual recovery, from the ward, to the rehab centre, then home, learning to walk again, getting a hearing aid and eye tests to help with the damage that microemboli did while he was ill。 And the nightmares and flashbacks, the wondering whether things will ever be the same。 And the wondering whether things could have been different。 I love Michael Rosen - we have a number of his children's books, he's really interesting on the radio and spot-on on social media, so I followed his story at the time with some sense of connection to him, and was so relieved as he recovered。 The book is lovely, really warm and full of humanity, quite an easy read。 。。。more

I wanted to give this 5 because it's by Michael Rosen and his experience of Covid: he is a good writer and taps right into my heart。 I should give it 3 because it's not his best by any stretch and there are too many repetitive bits or bits that are plain boring or unnecessary。 So, I settled for 4 because he's a national treasure - which, maybe he won't admit, but we, the reading public, think anyway。 I wanted to give this 5 because it's by Michael Rosen and his experience of Covid: he is a good writer and taps right into my heart。 I should give it 3 because it's not his best by any stretch and there are too many repetitive bits or bits that are plain boring or unnecessary。 So, I settled for 4 because he's a national treasure - which, maybe he won't admit, but we, the reading public, think anyway。 。。。more

Author, poet, and children's laureate Michael Rosen writes about his experience of Covid and the NHS, it sounds depressing but it's not。It includes notes by staff as he spent six weeks in an induced coma followed by lots of rehab, a good gentle read which is inspiring, beautifully crafted。 Author, poet, and children's laureate Michael Rosen writes about his experience of Covid and the NHS, it sounds depressing but it's not。It includes notes by staff as he spent six weeks in an induced coma followed by lots of rehab, a good gentle read which is inspiring, beautifully crafted。 。。。more
